Punctuation Unit

I noticed several of my students were struggling to write sentences appropriately.  They were adding capital letters in the middle of sentences and forgetting to put punctuation at the end of their sentences.  Also, since we have been working on answering "wh" questions, I wanted my kids to be able to differentiate between a period, question mark, and exclamation point.  Check out the activities we did, complete with links to the FREE products!

I found this cute FREE book from Erin Palleschi about punctuation on TPT called "Meet the Puncs."  It is great because we could practice reading, learn about punctuation, and the book even has little exercises to work on the concepts.

Next, we used these great sentence editing worksheets from Rachael Fox on TPT (also FREE).  These covered a lot of the issues we had been working (when to capitalize things, punctuation, and correct spelling of simple words!).  At times, my kids struggled to find all the mistakes, but they were definitely getting the hang of it by the 4th or 5th one we did!  We may need to re-instate some daily sentence corrections in my class this year!

Then, we did this fun Penguin Punctuation Activity from Plug-n-Plan (also FREE).  This was supposed to be a write around the room activity, but since we have been struggling with cheating and keeping our hands to ourselves, we did it as a table top activity.  I just handed out a few to each student, they did their work, then we rotated.  This activity only focused on which punctuation belongs at the end of each sentence which was nice for my kids because they only had to focus on one thing.

My speech pathologist did a great job of incorporating punctuation into her session as well.  She played a speech game and made each kid 3 flash cards.  Each student got a period, question mark, and exclamation point card.  Then, as they played the game, they had to hold up the correct punctuation for what they were saying.
